"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn
from it.” .............................................................................Proverbs 22:6
"LORD, when did we see you hungary and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?" ” ......................................................................Matthew 25:37-39
Community Development
Bringing fresh, clean water to the people of the Eastern Kambari region in northwest Nigeria is only one element of the Water Wins project. We seek to be a holistic ministry that also encourages community development in the villages where we work. In order to open new doors of opportunity for Nigerians in the area, Water Wins recently has begun a number of initatives, including:
Adult Literacy Classes
Local men and women are learning valuable reading and writing skills in both Hausa and English.
Health Education Classes
Women from area communities are being taught in the areas of home care, personal hygiene, diets during breastfeeding, and proper nutrition during pregnancy. They are also learning more about why children typically respond with fever after immunization (this is one reason why mothers are reluctant to have their children immunized).
Justice Classes
Youth from the region are learning about their basic rights as citizens, their obligations to government and their government's obligations to them, and peaceful and legal avenues they can take to address breaches of their rights.
Primary School Enrollment
Parents are being taught about the importance of enrolling their children in school.
Savings and Micro Credit
This program is now in its second year of operation. Its members, who self-drafted the group's rules, set up a savings program that distributes micro loans to local farmers who would like to increase the size of their farms. Members repay loans at an interest rate of 10%.
Grain Bank
Grain banks have been built to store grain for future use, to allow farmers to sell grain when prices are higher, and to give farmers opportunities to increase the size of their farms.
Latrines
The Water Wins team is building latrines and also teaching local people about the importance of sanitation in areas that lack latrines or sanitation of any kind.
